In this heightened state, the shaman journeys into the spirit world to identify the source of the affliction. Intrusions are typically perceived as energetic distortions: foreign presences that do not belong in the person’s energetic field.
Techniques for removal vary among traditions but often involve energetic pulling, sucking, or symbolic cutting. For example, in Amazonian traditions, a shaman might use breath or sacred tobacco (mapacho) to blow away the intrusion.
